In addition to his wide experience in Colorado waters, he has also fly fished in Costa Rica, Mexico and Alaska. Joe ties a wide variety of patterns for all types of warm and cold freshwater and saltwater species. While he ties a variety of standard patterns, he also ties many of his own designs. He ties commercially for the Laughing Grizzly Fly Shop in Longmont. He attends Altona Middle School in Longmont, where he is an honor student.

December 12 Mark McMillan

Mark is known in the tying circles as “Syntheticman” because he has the knack of going into a Dollar Store or Hobby Lobby and coming out with tons of materials to tie flies. He is also known as “Trashman,” other peoples garbage is Marks treasures. These flies look alien to some of us but they catch fish…lots of fish.  Join us as he brings new patterns to our attention: he will surely have you seeing the possibilities of common house hold items turning into new tying materials.  Mark is also a demonstration tier for the Denver Fly Show, ISE, West Denver TU Tying Clinic and is featured in Takahashi’s “Modern Midges”

January 9.  Please attend the Denver Fly show

January 16.  Nate Davis

Nate grew up under the tutelage of one of the regions best fly fishermen, his dad the late Don Davis.  Nate will bring to the tying clinic a wealth of tying techniques handed down from father to son. Nate will provide patterns that he found effective as a guide for Great Western Fly Fishing of Loveland.  Come see this talented tier who will also give you insight to fishing our local waters.  Nate is a Fisheries Biologist student at CSU.

January 23.  Casey Dunnigan

Casey is one of the new faces in fly tying and he will make a huge impression on those getting to know him.  Casey has extensive fly fishing experience in both still waters and streams.  He brings that expertise to the tying table as he designs flies that catch fish.  He has been invited to tie at the Denver Fly show and as his talents become known, he will certainly be asked to tie in other venues.  He is regarded by many to be one of the “up and coming” fly tiers to come out of the Front Range.

January 30.  Dennis Martin

Dennis is one of the shop rats of Angler’s Roost and will offer the clinic his expertise as both a cold and warm water fly fisherman.  Dennis is an expert at tying flies for Bass and Crappies as well as trout.  He is a very versatile tier and can tie size 26 midge patterns as well as deer hair bass flies.  He is a frequent demonstration fly tier and has tied at the Denver Fly show, East Denver TU Tying Clinic as well as demonstrating his craft at various fly shops along the Front Range. Dennis was also featured in Takahashi’s Modern Midges.

February 13.  Dick Shinton

Dick began fly fishing and fly tying in the early 1980s, but a career in international human resources got in the way of his time on the water and at the bench until he retired a few years ago. He now works and guides at the Laughing Grizzly Fly Shop in Longmont, and feeds his habit with more than 100 days a year on stream, mostly in Rocky Mountain National Park and other Front Range waters. He teaches a Kids Learn to Fly Fish program for 8-13 year olds sponsored by the Laughing Grizzly and the St Vrain Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and is a Counselor for the Colorado Trout Unlimited Youth Conservation and Fly Fishing Camp. Dick has also written several articles for High Country Angler, the official Colorado Trout Unlimited magazine.

February 20.  Frank Whispel

Frank has been fishing all his life (since about 4 years old) and fly fishing primarily for the past 20+ years.  He has been tying flies for the last 15 years and enjoys this aspect of this sport, almost as much as the fishing part.  In his never ending pursuit to catch anything that swims in the water, he has been trying to tie everything that fish eat, even so much as trying to tie Russian Olive seeds and other odd things for the pursuit of carp.  He has tied for TU at the West Denver TU Fly Tying Clinic and has taught several classes to other budding fly tyers as well.  He enjoys the teaching part immensely, especially when he can possibly trigger a strike from a young mind and get them as hooked on this sport as he is.  “The kids are the future and we adults need to focus more time and effort to teach them well”, is one of his favorite things to say.  He also chases fish in the salt but has less time to get after these fish.

February 27.  Rick Takahashi

Rick will be tying a selection of midges from his book “Modern Midges” as well as his favorite patterns for fishing the local waters.  Rick writes and illustrates for Fly Fisherman Magazine, is a fly designer for the Umpqua Feather Merchants, and is consulting with C and F Designs.  He has been tying flies for well over fifty years and teaches fly tying for the shop.  He is a demonstration fly tier for the Denver Fly show, ISE, West Denver TU Tying Clinics and will be available to sign his book after the clinic.

March 6 Pat Dorsey

We will have a book signing and tying demonstration by Pat Dorsey.  He has received the Guide of the Year Award and will tie many of the patterns he uses in his guide business.  His new book ”Tailwaters” and his DVD on Nymph Fishing will be available at the shop.  Pat will sign his book and the book will be available for purchase: it’s a must have if you fish tailwaters here in the Rockies.  He is one of the nicest guys around.

March 13.  Tom Ziegler

We met Tom at the recent Federation of Fly Fishers Conclave this past year and were very impressed with his deer hair fly patterns.  We invited him to come and share what he has learned handling deer hair.  Many of you will see him at the various fly tying venues, he is a must see.

March 20.  Jason Haddix

Jason is another shop rat who is an outstanding all around fly tier.  He will be tying a variety of his patterns that he has developed for all types of species.  He is a commercial tier and a demonstration tier who has tied at the Denver Fly show, Grand Junction Tying Clinic and several warm water clinics for our neighboring states.  He is on the Pro Staff of Peak Vises.

March 27.  Charlie Craven

Owner of Charlie’s Flybox will be demonstrating his tying techniques for patterns such as the Charlie Boy Hopper, JuJuBe’s, poison Tung, Two Bit Hooker to name a few.  Charlies was recently awarded Top retailer of the Year, is writing his second book on fly tying, published his first book on Basic Fly Tying and is a designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants.  Angler’s Roost will have copies of his book on basic fly tying if you want to have him sign one for you.
